Obama has promised abortion lobbyists that he would work diligently to immediately pass FOCA, the Freedom of Choice Act, which would deregulate the abortion industry. It will overturn all modest restraints currently placed on abortion at the state level--parental notification, waiting periods, partial birth abortion, etc. It will make abortion, for any reason, legal for all nine months of pregnancy. It will overturn the conscience clauses which currently allow pharmacists and health care professionals to opt out of abortion procedures because of conscience. (So much for the "choice" in "pro-choice".) The U.S. Catholic Bishops have declared that if Catholic hospitals are required to perform abortions, they will be forced to end all obstetric services, and possibly shut down the hospitals altogether. Currently, there are 615 Catholic hospitals in the U.S. and over 15% of all hospital admissions in the U.S. are to Catholic hospitals. FOCA will also force taxpayers to fund abortion. Insidiously, abortion providers who offer adoption counseling will be ineligible for those dollars. FOCA is truly PRO-abortion legislation.
